Day 18: July 6, 2013

After our Friday night hike, we slept in a little and went on a hunt for a surfing beach. Mitch's resident gave him advice to try the beach on the marine base because it was a hidden secret for surfing waves. My cousin, David, was stationed here on the marine base so we asked him how the conditions were for surfing and he told us they were not for beginners and pretty rough. We decided to try it anyway just to see some big waves and another base. It was a beautiful base that had everything... School, commissary, parks and even a huge gymnastics gym!!! If only the marines had doctors! It was very hard to navigate but we found a beach rentals store that had very inexpensive rentals like surfboards, boogie boards, flippers, chairs, tents, etc. We decided to stick to boogie boards and Mitch suggested flippers too, which we found out later, was a great idea! When we got to the beach, it was very wide and not crowded at all. The lifeguards had a yellow flag up which meant the waves and current were very strong, and flippers were mandatory to be in the water! I didn't boogie board for very long, but the boys were out there for almost 3 hours. The waves were the biggest I've ever seen and could really knock you around. It was a blast! We left around 3:00 and went back to shower for our 5:15 luau at Germaine's Luau. It was a must see for any tourist, but I probably wouldn't go twice.. It was pretty cheesy and the food was very cafeteria style for the price. I know there would have been no other way to feed close to 700 people though. We had fun being cheesy tourists, and the best part was the fire twirler. He was impressive, but we still cut out early.
A plan landed right when we got there. It was SO close to us!
Thanks for the pic Maj!
We're going back out!
