Day 24: July 12, 2013

I have definitely gotten lazier on blogging, but Ill get back on it this weekend because we do our adventurous stuff with the boys! Maj and I decided this week that even though we just lay out when we go to the beach during the week, we need to go back to trying a new one every day instead of going to Hickham and Ala Moana. On Wednesday, we went to the stadium swap meet. It was fun to walk around and see all the touristy goodies and t-shirts were cheap (7 for $20). Then we shopped at the Ala Moana mall because it was rainy. On Thursday, we drove to the other side of Waikiki to White Plains Beach, which is a military beach with rentals and services only available to military, but still open to the public. Great place for beginning surfers, so the boys definitely want to go there! It gets very crowded though which surprises me because it is on a part of the island that is very undeveloped... But nice new houses! On Friday, I really wanted to get a workout change from my morning base run, so Maj and I went to Koko Head to get a good sweat. I went all the way to the top by myself, so I was feeling very proud and it was a very peaceful feeling to be at the top alone. After Koko Head, we stopped at a trip advisor recommendation called Uncle Clays pure House of Aloha. It was incredible shaved ice!! It had shaved ice on the bottom with syrup and then organic Tahitian vanilla bean Ice cream then more shaved ice and fresh fruit. The syrups were freshly made and not that typical sugary syrup... The strawberry syrup actually still had seeds in it. I got pineapple and strawberry syrup with fresh sliced pineapple on top. I recommend getting the smallest size because I got the medium and it was huge! I felt bad throwing some away because it was $7.00! Uncle Clay was probably the friendliest, most sincere man I've ever met.. He greeted us, introduced himself and us and then introduced us to other customers in the shop. He loved the sense of Ohana that is so important here!
We went to Sandy Beach next to the blowhole afterwards and this is the beach meant for advanced body surfers. They say the waves crash so close to shore and very rough that there are many neck injuries from going into the sand... This was also the thong beach. Every little local teeny bopper had thongs on. Maj and I decided their parents couldn't possibly know they were dressing like that! On Friday night, we went to beach walk in Waikiki and did dinner at Giovanni's Pastrami. It was just okay.. Typical sports bar. Afterwards, Dan and I, Maj and Mitch, and Korey and Kelly went to the Hale Koa for drinks and live music on the beach. We went to meet a military couple that lives here near the marine base, but the wife is from Pittsburgh. She is my dad's coworker's niece and we got fixed up on a blind friend date! It was really fun and nice to chat with some military friends that have a different story.. He is a military lawyer. Fun few days! Off to see the turtles at the North Shore! Sorry for the lack of pictures :(
Hiking through rain and a rainbow!
